Florence Magnall was born on 1 February 1880 to John (GM151/GM007) and Sarah (nee Hargreaves – FM020) at 45 Cog Lane, Habergham Eaves – The Peeping Tom Inn. She was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Habergham Eaves on 11 February of the same year. Their address was recorded as Stoops Lane and John’s occupation was recorded as a collier.

The 1881 census shows that Florence was 1 years old and was living at 45 Cog Lane, the Peeping Tom Inn, in Habergham Eaves with her parents and siblings. Unfortunately, the enumerator of the census recorded Florence as a boy called Lawrence!

By the time of the 1891 census the family had moved to the Shepherd’s Arms public house at 69-71 Cog Lane. Florence had regained her correct sex was now 11 years old and at school.

In the 1901 Census Florence was recorded as Florrie and was 21 years old, the family was still living at the Shepherd’s Arms which was described as a “beer house”. The profession column for Florrie was left blank.

Florence married Sidney Herbert Hoyle (35) on 29 November at St John the Baptist Church in Burnley, Florence was 24 living at 71 Cog Lane. Sidney was a “Clogger” living at 126 Sandy Gate.

Florence’s father, John, died on 27 December 1904, just less than a month later.

Florence and Sidney had the following children:

  • John Magnall Hoyle (1906-1984)
  • Albert Desmond Hoyle (1911-1912)

At the time of the 1911 Census, the family were living at 31 Eliza Street, Burnley. Sidney (40) was working as a “Clogger & Boot Repairer” from their home. Florence was 31, John was 4 and Albert was only 2 months. Visiting them at the time of the census were her sister, Rachel Foster, her husband Thomas and their son Eric (3).

Albert died in January 1912 at 11 months old and was buried in grave 14285 of Burnley Cemetery.

Florence’s husband, Sidney, died on September 1935 aged 66 in the Victoria Hospital in Blackpool and was buried with his son, Albert, on 18 September.

Florence died on 19 March 1955 aged 75, she was living at 26 Oak Street and was cremated on 26 March.
