George was born to Jesse Mangnall (GM107) and Alice in about 1867 in Westhoughton. At the time of the 1871 census he was living with his parents at Grove Lane in Westhoughton and he was described as being a scholar.

By the time of the 1881 census the family had moved to Warrington Road Kingsdown Terrace in Abram. George was now working as a labourer in a coal mine.

George married Elizabeth Winstanley on the 1st January 1891 at the Church of St John the Evangelist in Abram. The 1891 census shows George and Elizabeth living at 97 Warrington Road in Abram. Although shown as a separate household unit there was another family living in the house – a Peter and Elizabeth Winstanley and their son James who was 16. Peter and Elizabeth were George’s new in-laws. George is now shown as a coal miner.

George and Elizabeth had at least four children:-

  • Jesse (EM317) born in 1892 in Abram;
  • Lucy (EM318) born in 1896 in Abram;
  • Peter (EM319) born in 1899 in Abram;
  • Ellen (DM080) born in 1901 in Abram.

George was still working in the mines as a “coal hewer” in 1901 and the census shows that they are now living at 459 Warrington Road.

George and his family must have moved to Doncaster sometime after this. Elizabeth died in Doncaster in 1922 (RoD Doncaster 1934 Q2 9c 787) and George died in Doncaster in 1934 aged 66 (RoD Doncaster 1934 Q2 9c 787).
