John Robert Magnall was born either at the end of 1893 or the beginning of 1894. His mother was Annie Magnall (nee Stephens) who had been born in Spain as a British subject. I don’t yet know who John’s father was.

At the time of the 1901 Census John was recorded as a scholar living at 7 Adelaide Street in Ince-in-Makerfield, the house of his Uncle Daniel Stephens.

John served as Sapper 157716 in the 252nd Tunnelling Coy., Royal Engineers during the Great War and died on the 20th November 1917. He is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial in Louveral, Nord, France.
