Lewis was born in Burnley on 21st August 1890 to John (GM151/GM007) and Sarah (FM020) Magnall. He was christened on the 18th September 1890 in Gannow. At the time of the 1891 Census he was 7 months old and living with his family at the Shepherd’s Arms public house at 69 and 71 Cog Lane.

The 1901 census shows Lewis to be 10 years old still living with his parents at the Shepherd’s Arms.

Lewis was 20 years old and still living at the Shepherd’s Arms with his widowed mother at the time of the 1911 Census. He had no occupation recorded.

During the Great War Lewis served with the 9th Scottish Rifles as Private 17712 in France. He received a number of medals including the Victory medal, British medal and 15 Star medal.

Lewis died on 6th January 1922 aged 31. He was still living with his parents at the Shepherd’s Arms on Cog Lane. He was buried in Burnley Cemetery on  9 January with his parents.
