Matilda was born about 1817 in Bolton, one of several daughters of John Mangnall (JM094) and Ellen Fowler.

The 1841 Census shows Matilda aged about 20 living with her mother and siblings on St George’s Road in Little Bolton. We don’t know where her father was. In 1851, at the time of the census, she was living with her father, her sisters Sarah Ann (HM158) and Elizabeth (HM161), and her brother Wilbraham (HM160) at High Lawns in Bolton.

The 1861 Census shows that Matilda was still living at High Lawns with her father, and her sisters Sarah and Elizabeth. Her father died in 1865.

By the time of the 1871 Census Matilda was living with her sister Elizabeth at 185 Chorley New Road in Little Bolton. Both Matilda and Elizabeth were living on the “Interest of money” and they had a servant, Ellen Robson, aged 19.

The 1881 Census shows that Matilda and Elizabeth were “Annuitant” living at 173A Chorley New Road in Little Bolton with their servant Maria Wilkes from Bishops Castle in Shropshire. I don’t know if they had moved house or whether the houses had been renumbered but looking at the neighbours it would suggest that perhaps Matilda and Elizabeth moved to smaller premises along the road.

Matilda died in 1885 and was buried on 25 May 1885 at St Peter’s, Bolton.

Matilda and Elizabeth were sisters to Walter Mangnall (HM023).
