Richard Mangnall was born about 1834 in Westhoughton, Lancashire (est. from 1851 and 1881 census), the son of Thomas Mangnall and Martha Brindle. He was baptised on 30th March 1834 in Westhoughton.

The 1851 census shows that Richard was a coal miner assistant living with his parents, brothers and sisters at the New White Lion in Westhoughton.

Richard married Margaret Hartley (GM128), daughter of Hamlet and Mary Hartley, on 30th May 1858 in Deane-by-Bolton.(MS)(Hamlet emigrated to the USA in 1862). They had the following children:-

  • Eliza Hartley (FM137) b.c.1855 (Eliza is shown as Eliza Mangnall in later years, she was born before Richard and Margaret married (illegitimate daughter?) and can be found in different households through the census years eg in 1861 she is with Margaret’s parents but is described as a daughter even though Mary is 58 and Eliza only 4);
  • James (FM309) b.1859, baptised 21 August 1859 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates, died before 1866;
  • William (FM310) baptised 28 January 1862 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates, died before 1870;
  • Margaret (FM138) b.c.1864, baptised 23 October 1864 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates;
  • James Albert (FM139) 10th Dec 1866 in Lostock, LAN (RoB Bolton 1867 Q1 vol.8c p.269 ?), baptised 30 December 1866 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates;
  • William (FM311) b.c. 1870, baptised 17 April 1870 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates
  • Martha (FM140) b.c.1871 in Westhoughton, baptised 10 March 1872 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates;
  • Richard (EM097) b.c.1875 in Westhoughton, baptised 3 December 1876 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates;
  • Mary (EM098) b.c.1878, in Westhoughton, baptised 4 September 1878 at St John the Evangelist, Wingates.

At the time of the 1861 Census Richard was working as a coal miner and was living at Wingates with Margaret and their son James who was only 20 months old. Unfortunately, James did not live for long, he died either shortly after the census or in quarter 2 of 1865.

The 1871 Census shows Richard working as a butcher having moved to Wingate with his wife Margaret and children Eliza, Margaret and James.

In the 1881 census Richard was living at 39 Wingates, Westhoughton, he was now aged 47, a Check Weighman (Collier).

Richard was 57 years old by the time of the 1891 Census and was now working as a Farmer with his son Richard working as a farmer’s apprentice, presumably for his father. He was living at Poplars in Lostock, Westhoughton and the youngest five children and his wife still lived with him.
