William Mangnall was born about 1850 in Prestwich to Anne (HM184) and William (HM120). In the 1861 Census he is eleven years old and living with his parents and siblings at Clark’s Hill in Prestwich.
William became an architect like his father and, on his father’s death in 1868, took over his position in the company of Travis and Mangnall. Travis retired also about this time and a new company was formed called Mangnall and Littlewoods.
The Slater’s Directory of 1869 for Lancashire shows that William was living at Clark’s hill in Prestwich and that Mangnall and Littlewoods was based at 3 Norfolk Street in Manchester.
The 1871 Census shows that William was now 21 years old, an architect, and that he was still living with his mother and siblings at Clark’s Hill.
William married Emma Collins on the 3rd June 1874 at the Parish Church in Prestwich.

I think one of the witnesses was Charles Lomas Evans. I wonder if this is a relation of Thomas Lomas Evans who married William’s younger sister Lucy in 1894?
William and Emma had at least three sons and a daughter:-
- William (EM285) b.c.1877 in Rusholme;
- Tom Kenrick (EM286) b.c.1878 in Rusholme;
- Percival (EM287) b.c.1880 in Rusholme;
- Bessie M (EM316) b.c. 1882 in Rusholme.
The 1881 Census shows that William was living at 5 Duke St, Rusholme with Emma, their three sons, Emma’s brother George who was a land Surveyor, and a servant. William is described as “Architect & Surveyor to the Rusholme Local Board of Heath”. Presumably he did this as part of Mangnall and Littlewoods.
The 1891 Census shows that William has remarried to Annie (no surname yet) and is living at 41 Plymouth Street in Broughton, Salford. All of the children are at boarding schools.
By the time of the 1901 Census William is living with Annie at 46 York Street, Broughton. All of the children appear to have left home or are staying with Willams mother at Taintree house in Audlem.
William died aged 67 was buried in Audlem Cemetery on the 21st October 1917 in grave number 478 which had been purchased by his sister Blanche Hall on the 31st January 1918 for 1 guinea.
