John was born in 1858, the eldest son of William Mangnall (GM112) and Mary (GM113). He was christened at the Church of St John the Evangelist in Abram on the 3rd October 1858.

John had been apprenticed to a carpenter by the time of the 1871 Census , he was now 12 years old and living at Foggs Fold in Ince-in-Makerfield with his family.

By the time of the 1881 Census John was working as a Colliery Carpenter. He was still living with his family who had moved to 49 Lord Street, Balmoral Villas in Hindley.

John married Mary before the 1891 Census and they had a son:-

  • Ernest Ramsdale Mangnall (EM335), born 1890.

The family were living at 170 Bickershaw Lane, just along the road from his parents. John was still working as a Colliery Carpenter.
