Abel was born in Westhoughton about 1797, the son of William and Ann Mangnall. He was baptised on the 24th December 1797. He married Ellen Chaddock (JM067) on 31st May 1824 at All Saints Church in Wigan (IGI / FamilySearch).

The 1841 Census shows that Abel was living at Dobb Brow in Weshoughton with Ellen and that they were silk weavers. They had six children:-

  • Ann (HM152) b.c.1823;
  • Alice (GM208) bap.23 Jan 1825;
  • William (GM209) bap.29 Mar 1829;
  • Jane (GM210) bap.31 Oct 1830;
  • Jesse (GM107 / GM211) b.c.1838;
  • Ellen (GM212) bap.10 Mar 1839.

The 1851 Census shows that the family was still living at Dob Brow with all the children.

The 1861 Census shows that Abel and Ellen were now living on Chapel Lane in Westhoughton with Alice, Jesse and Ellen. They also have a five year old Thomas Mangnall who is said to be Abel and Ellen’s son but must be one of their grand children. All except Thomas werwe handloom silk weavers.

The IGI also gives a Thomas (GM253) as being born to Abel and Ellen and christened on 10 June 1827.

Abel died on the 19 May 1869 and was burried in the Westhoughton Quaker Burial Ground. Ellen died on the 18 August 1875 and was also buried in the Quaker Burial Ground.
