According to the 1851 census, Thomas was born about 1810 in Little Lever. The Parish register for his marriage to Sarah tells us that his father was called James Mangnall and he was a dyer. Thomas had also been previously married as the register tells us that he was a widower.

He married Sarah Walker (HM181)(b.c.1816 in Little Lever) on the 15th May 1844 at St Peter’s Church in Bolton and they had the following children (note that the first two are twins)::

  • Alice (GM293) baptised 5 May 1845 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever; died 6 May 1845 aged 1 day; buried 8 May 1845 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever;
  • Hannah (GM294) baptised 5 May 1845 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever; died 6 May 1845 aged 1 day; buried 8 May 1845 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever;
  • Thomas Walker (GM247), b.c.1846 in Little Lever; baptised 11 June 1846 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever;
  • William (GM248), b.c.1848 in Little Lever;
  • Edwin (FM006), born 1851; baptised 15 Nov 1851 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever;
  • Hannah Alice, born 1853; baptised 26 June 1853 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever;
  • James, born 1855; baptised 13 Nov 1855 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever; died 1859; buried 14 January 1859 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever.

Thomas spent most of his life working as a carter but by the time of the birth of James he was working as an ostler.

Thomas died in 1856 and was buried at St Matthew’s, Little Lever on the 12 December 1856. Sarah survived Thomas, remarrying on the 6 January 1861 to Ralph Livesey at St Peter’s Church in Bolton. She died in 1895 and was buried on the 25 November 1895 at St Matthew’s, Little Lever.
