John was born in 1850 or early 1851 in Annderton to Banister Mangnall (HM027) and Mary (HM171). He was baptised at Christ Church in Adlington on the 19th January 1851. The 1851 Census shows that John was 3 months old and living with his parents and older brother as lodgers at 1 Norris Fold, Anderton.

The 1861 Census shows that the family had moved their own lodgings at Land in Rivington, John was now 10 years old and a scholar.

The 1871 Census shows that John was training to be a teacher at a teacher training college in Battersea.

John moved back to Lancashire to work as a “School Master” and married Ann, they had the following children:

  • John (EM104), b.c.1875 in Goodshaw;
  • Annie (EM105), born 1876 in Turton;
  • Robert (EM127), born 1878, died 1879;
  • Edith Mary (EM339), born 1882 in Turton;
  • William Dixon (EM340), born 1884 in Turton;
  • Alice Gertrude (EM341), born 1888;
  • Arthur Rivington (EM342), born 1892 in Huddersfield.

The 1881 Census shows that John and family were living at 137 Eagley Bridge in Turton, John was a “British Schoolmaster”. When Alice was baptised on the 8th September 1888, shortly after the death of her grandfather Banister (HM027), they were living in Bradshaw. However, John was working as a “Certified Elementary School Master” in Huddersfield by the time of the 1891 Census and they were living at 11 Clara Street in Fartown.

For some reason they moved back to Lancashire by the time of the 1901 Census and they were living at 161 Church Road in Bolton.
