James Albert Mangnall was born on the 10th December 1866 in Lostock, Westhoughton, Lancashire, the son of Richard Mangnall (GM127) and Margaret Hartley (GM128).

The 1871 census shows that James was a scholar living with his parents, and two older sisters at Wingates in Westhoughton.

In the 1881 census James was living at 39 Wingates, Westhoughton with his parents, he was aged 15 and was working as a pony driver at a colliery. He had become a coal miner by the time of the 1891 Census

James emigrated to the United States of America in 1893 to join his father-in-law Hamlet Hartley and became a naturalised American in 1898. He married Eliza J Hartley on the 20th April 1896 in Pawnee City, Nebraska. They had the following children:-

  • Hamlet Emmanuel (EM216) b.16th May 1899, d. Nov 1984;
  • James Edwin (DM062) b. 11th May 1901, d. Oct 1987;
  • Myrtle (DM063) b.c.1904;
  • Evelyn (DM064) b.c.1906;
  • Margaret (DM065) b.c.1908;
  • Ellora (DM066) b.c.1910;
  • Cecil (DM067) b.c. 1912 or 1919, d. 23rd May 1988

James died on 21st September 1950 in Pawnee City and was buried on the 25th September.
