Margaret was christened on the 7 August 1870 at Holy Trinity Church in Habergham Eaves. The baptismal register shows that the family were living at Back Lane and Margaret’s father was a miner.

The 1871 Census shows that Margaret was only 9 months old and living at Back Lane with her family.

In the 1881 Census she is 10 year old scholar, the family were now living at the Gretna Green Inn at Four Lane Ends in her maternal father’s household.

In the 1891 Census she is a dressmaker aged 20 living with her family at 151 Cog Lane.

Margaret married William Frankland (FM247) (b.c.1864) on the 1 September 1896 at Saint Matthew’s in Burnley. William (32) was a piano tuner living at 15 Derby Street in Colne. Margaret was 26 and living at 147 Cog Lane, her father was recorded as a shop keeper.

William and Margaret had at least four children:

  • Vivian (1903-1903)
  • Gwendoline Alice (Gwennie) (1903-1969)
  • Muriel Enid (1908-1967)
  • Cyril (1909-1981)

The 1901 Census shows that William (36), Margaret (30) and Gladys (2) had moved to 214 Cromwell Road in Peterborough. William was working as a “Pianoforte Tuner”. Gladys was born in Colne so they had only recently moved there.

The 1911 Census reveals that the family had moved back to Lancashire and were living at 119 Bankhouse Road in Nelson. William was still working as a piano tuner. The Census also shows that Margaret had given birth to 5 children, one of whom had died.

Margaret was a widow by the time of the 1939 Register and living with her oldest daughter, Gladys, and her husband, John Thwaite, at 30 Fletcher Street in Nelson. Margaret’s occupation was described as “Private Means”

Margaret died on 10 March 1949 aged 78. Probate reads:

FRANKLAND Margaret of 137 Chapel House-road Nelson Lancashire widow died 10 March 1949 at 12 Rendel-street Burnley Lancashire Probate London 26 March to Gladys Thwaite widow and Gwendoline Alice Carrington (wife of Thomas Carrington). Effect £1362 4s. 11d.
