Joseph was christened in Holy Trinity Church in Habergham Eaves on the 29 November 1868. The family were living at Back Lane and Joseph’s father worked as a miner.

The 1871 Census shows Joseph as 2 years old living with his parents at his maternal grandparents’ house 59 Back Lane in Habergham Eaves.

The 1881 Census shows him as a scholar aged 12 – the family are now living at the Gretna Green Inn on Coal Clough Lane which was being run by his maternal grandfather James Greenwood.

In the 1891 Census, he is a weaver aged 22 living with his parents at 151 Cog Lane in Burnley just round the corner from the Gretna Green Inn. Joseph’s father is described as a retired grocer.

Joseph married Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane Wilkinson (FM248) (b.c.1866) on the 11 September 1900 at Saint Matthew’s in Burnley. Joseph was working as a grocer. Eliza as a dress maker and they were living at 147 Cog Lane. They had two children:

The 1901 census shows that Joseph and Eliza were living at 17 Ulster Street in Burnley. Joseph was a “Grocer shopkeeper” and Eliza was a dressmaker.

On 28 October 1903 Joseph and Eliza took their newly born son, James Vivian, to Holy Trinity Church for him to be baptised. The records show that they were living at 4 Nairne Street and Joseph was working as a Grocer.

In 1911 the census shows that Joseph and Eliza were living at 69 Athol Street in Burnley. Joseph was now 42 years old and working as a Cotton Weaver.

Joseph died on 25th December 1931 aged 63 in Blackpool. Probate was granted on the 14th January 1932 and read as follows:-

“Magnall Joseph of 62 Layton-road Blackpool died 25 December 1931 Administration London 14 January to Eliza Jane Magnall widow and James Vivian Magnall motor driver. Effects £2643 7s. 7d. “
