Frederick Mangnall Haughton was born about 1867 to Thomas and Eliza Haughton in Kirkdale, Liverpool. Thomas was a “Coal Proprietor and Iron Founder” according to the 1881 Census. At the time of this Census Fred was 14 years old and a scholar living with his parents at 10 Mayfields in Kirkdale. One of his older brothers, Harold, was aged 29 and a Clergyman.

Fred married Gertrude Mary Sant in 1895 (RoM 1895 Sep Cheshire 8a 521) and by the time of the 1901 Census they had two children:

  • Madeline Gertrude aged 4, born 6th May 1896 in Burslem, Staffordshire;
  • Geoffrey Thomas Heald aged 8 months, born 11th July 1900 in Mow Cop, Staffordshire.

Fred had trained to become a Church of England Clergyman and was vicar of St Thomas’ Church in Mow Cop from 21st April 1900 to 22nd July 1914. Fred and Gertrude had at least two other children:-

  • Donald Fred, born 8th October 1903 in Mow Cop;
  • Margaret Haughton, born 21st January 1912 in Mow Cop.

Fred’s mother, Eliza Heald, was the daughter of Hugh Heald and Alice Mangnall, that is why Fred’s middle name was Mangnall.
