Tom Kenrick Mangnall was born about 1878 to William Mangnall (FM292) and his wife Emma (nee Collins). Tom’s middle name is taken from his paternal grandmother – Anne Kenrick (HM184).
By the time of the 1881 Census Tom was 3 years old and living with his parents and two brothers at 5 Duke Street in Rusholme.
The 1891 Census shows that Tom is known as Kenrick Mangnall and that he was a pupil in Barton Upon Irwell.
We don’t know yet where Tom was at the time of the 1901 Census. We do know that by 1915, he was living in Canada because he signed an attestation paper on October 13th at Victoria to join the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force to serve in Europe. He gives his next of kin as his sister Bessie Mangnall who was living at “The Grange, Audlem, Cheshire”. His data of birth is shown as “January 21st 1880” yet we know he was born in 1878! He is also described as having an apparent age of 30 years and 9 months. Tom was unmarried and was working as a clerk. The description given on the attestation papers show that he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, had a girth of 34 inches with a range of expansion of 4 inches, fresh complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He was a member of the the Church of England and had J.K.M. tattooed on his left forearm. He was considered fit for active duty but we have no further record of him yet.
