Eda was born in 1889 in Heywood, Lancashire. His parents were Ralph Magnall (FM034) and Elizabeth Howarth.

In the 1891 Census the Eda was living with her family at 8 Tenterfield (Edenfield Rd), Norden. The family were at 26 New Road in Norden by the time of the 1901 Census..

Eda married Wilfred Smith in 1917 in Rochdale (RoM Rochdale 1917 Q3 8e 33 Partner Wilfred Smith).
