Samuel was born in about 1889 in Westhoughton, the first son of William Mangnall and his wife Sarah (nee Unsworth). He was living with his family at 102 Market Street in Westhoughton at the time of both the 1891 Census and the 1901 Census.

Samuel married Ellen (surname unknown) in 1909 and they later lived at 26 Park Rd, Westhoughton.

During World War I Samuel served with the 1st/7th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers as Private 70717. He died on
Tuesday, 6th November 1917 aged 29 in the 3rd Battle of Gaza and is buried in the Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel.
